Key Cutting Oldham

key cutting Oldham

Locksmith Oldham offers a key cutting service that comes to your home or place of business to make a copy. We cut a range of keys, including house, patio door, garage, window, cabinet and security keys. Our locksmiths have 12 years of experience and are City and Guilds trained, DBS checked and fully insured. We don't charge any call-out fee.

Most of our call-outs include a worn key that won’t copy anymore, a house key without a manufacturer’s name, or just a spare while the first one hasn’t been lost yet. We pick the correct key blank rather than just throwing one together and let you know if the key can be copied before we start.

Key Cutting for Homes and Businesses

The majority of the keys that we cut are for houses, garages, windows and sometimes offices, cabinets or lockers. But, before anything can be done, you must identify which type of blank you are going to use, because if you don't have the correct profile, it won't fit into the lock.

Other types of keys we cut:

  • Garage, gate and padlock keys: for sheds, side gates and other outbuildings
  • Cabinet and locker keys: in workshops, offices and other shared buildings
  • Patio door keys: sometimes this is a separate key from the key for your front door
  • Window lock keys: e.g., for locks on uPVC windows
  • Night latch keys: these are small flat keys with a serrated edge and are used for rim night latches which are often found on timber front doors
  • Mortice keys: these are bigger than night latch keys and have a flat blade with cut steps, they open mortice locks (including BS3621 locks) which are commonly found on external doors
  • Euro cylinder keys: these are reversible keys with a serrated edge on both sides and are used on uPVC and composite doors
  • Security and restricted keys: these have high security profiles

If you’re not sure of your key type, give us a ring and describe it to us, or send a photo via WhatsApp and we can let you know. Occasionally we’ll get a key profile we just can’t copy, as the correct key blank isn’t available. If this is the case, we’ll let you know before we start.

Keys with no brand markings may need the key blank bought separately and some minor filing to get a perfect fit. Different key types are common in different areas of Rochdale and surroundings. For example, terraces in Werneth, Glodwick and Coldhurst may use mortice or night latch keys. Euro cylinder keys are common on uPVC and composite doors in estates such as Limeside and Fitton Hill. Semi-detached houses in Shaw, Royton and Crompton tend to have three different keys: back and front door and garage.

But cutting the key isn't the whole job. A key that looks great but doesn’t work isn't done yet, so we test every key we make against the original and let you try it in your own lock before we leave.

Getting a Spare or Replacement Key

If you still have a working key, we can copy it at your address, but having a spare cut before the original is lost or worn out is definitely better than relying on one key. It’s also a good idea to have several copies cut at once rather than scheduling multiple visits.

However, if you’ve lost your only key, then it’s impossible to make a new one from scratch. Some keys can be cut from a code or a serial number, but this depends on the lock and doesn’t apply to every key. Otherwise, getting back in is a locksmith job, and the lock might need to be replaced.

Keys cut by a locksmith at your door cost between £70 and £100. It depends on what type of key cutting is required; a house key is cheaper than a security key and keys that we have to order a blank for will cost more.

We don’t charge a call-out fee, prices may increase for visits outside of normal working hours but we always confirm this over the phone before we set off. All of our keys are guaranteed for 12 months.

Old keys should be inspected closely before they’re copied. This is especially true of worn keys found in older properties, such as original sash & case windows and locks still fitted to many homes in Royton and Chadderton. It’s inevitable that keys which are used regularly over many years will begin to wear down, and if a worn key is copied, the new key is just as likely to become worn.

Copying Security and Restricted Keys

Restricted keys and high-security keys can’t always be freely copied. We may need to see an authorisation card or evidence of ownership before we can cut a key like this. These types of key are controlled for the protection of the owner of a locking system.

Restricted keys are commonly used on staff only doors and filing cabinets in commercial properties such as shops, offices and HMOs. If you require a master keying system to fit multiple doors we can set this up with one of our commercial locksmiths. Some vehicle keys and fobs will require programming in addition to cutting; this is a service that our auto locksmiths will be able to help with.

We are here all over Oldham, from Freehold by the tram station on Block Lane and Werneth near Werneth Park to Failsworth on Oldham Road, Royton on Rochdale Road, Lees and Saddleworth villages of Uppermill and Delph on the A62 Huddersfield Road.
